Summer Skin | The Base

The most sought after summer skin starts with a radiant base.

You all know what I'm talking about… that 'natural' glow. Accentuated by the sunshine, 'glowing' skin is always a hit when the temperature starts rising! AND the benefits of opting for this look are not limited to the visual attributes. The products used for this look are generally lighter and more comfortable for the skin in the summer heat. Tinted moisturisers are a popular choice, especially if you have good skin. However, they do have their limitations when it comes to redness, blemishes, scarring or any underlying skin issue.

Here I have chosen five products which I think are essential for any skin base in the warmer weather!
Lighter (in density rather than colour!) and more radiant foundation is a must, and although I love an endless list of foundation I personally favour both the YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat and the NARS Sheer Glow. These both create a healthy looking finish, are easy to apply and build (which is especially important if you ever feel the need for a more dense coverage). And although these are my go to options in the summer months, budget foundations can produce the same effect for half the price. The Rimmel Wake Me Up foundation is a great option and is available in drugstores both in the UK and internationally.

All these foundations produce a dewy finish which I adore. However, there are still days where I still feel the need to set my foundation. This is especially true when the weather really starts to rise in temperature. I always reach for a translucent powder in the summer months particularly when I find myself blotting a little more.

Coloured powders are great, but blotting with a pigmented powder can not only feel cakey and heavy but it can also create what I like to call the ‘island effect’. Essentially, wherever you blot, you create a powder island. And the more you blot the more prominent the islands become! So... my translucent powder of choice is the Laura Mercier Invisible Loose Setting Powder. However, you can easily find a translucent powder in any drugstore. I find they are lighter, and applying with a brush after blotting with blotter papers creates a lighter and invisible finish without disturbing your foundation, or the rest of your makeup.

Highlighters are also essential in creating a natural glowing base. The NARS Illuminator’s are a great liquid highlighter. They can be used on top of your foundation to emphasise specific features. A small (and I mean tiny) amount goes a long way in this instance as the liquid blends out to create the most intense shimmer. They can also be mixed into any of these foundations or another foundation to create a subtle glow/shimmer. Powder highlighters are also great, especially Mac’s Mineralise Skinfinish, as it provides a beautiful highlight with minimal powder. Its rich pigmentation means the amount of powder used is minimal meaning that the highlight appears more natural and is still lightweight.

If you want the perfect summer skin. Look no further. These are the products for you!
